Grand Duke (Grand Duchess) (title of the Pontifical Imperial Household) The rank and title of Grand Duke of Rome-Ruthenia is held by right by the immediate members of the Pontifical and Imperial Household of the Prince-Bishop of Rome-Ruthenia, following customs from the Middle Ages. The title originated with Eastern Roman Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. It represents the highest rank of noble title within the Pontifical States and ranks immediately below the dignity of Cardinal. The Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses of Rome-Ruthenia hold the style of Pontifical and Imperial Highness. This rank and title is held by right by the immediate family of the Prince-Bishop, i.e., any children, parents, and siblings; the Apostolic Princess; and the immediate family of the Apostolic Princess, i.e., any children, parents, and siblings. The rank and title of Grand Duke of Rome is held by right by the honourary members of the Pontifical and Imperial Household. These are the Electors of Trier, Mainz, Cologne, and Würzburg and their consorts. They hold the style of Imperial and Royal Highness if the Elector is a layman, and Most Eminent Imperial and Royal Highness if the Elector (as is more customary) is a cleric.
